What does "Private" vs "Public" Document access mean?

Last updated on Feb 23, 2026

Short Answer: "Private" means only team members can view the document. "Public" means anyone with the link can view it, and no login is required.

PreRequisites

  1. Access to the "Share performance review" modal.

Steps

  1. Open the "Share performance review" modal by clicking "Share".
The modal opens and displays the "Document access" options.

  2. Read the descriptions under the Document access section.
    You will see:

    • Private — Only team members can view this performance review.

    • Public — Anyone with the link can view. No login required.

  3. Select the appropriate Document access option based on your sharing needs.

    • Choose Private to restrict viewing to authorized team members.

    • Choose Public to allow anyone with the link to view.

Then click "Save", or use "Copy link" if you selected Public.
The selected access level is applied to the performance review.

Troubleshooting

  1. Recipients cannot view a Public link.

Likely Cause: Organization-level restrictions or the recipient’s network environment blocks public access.

Action: Click "Copy link" again and resend it. If the issue continues, switch to Private and invite users directly by email, or contact an Admin to verify sharing permissions.

Note: The modal clearly states: "Public — Anyone with the link can view. No login required." Use Public access carefully for sensitive documents.
